How to Make a Container Gym Feel Open and Spacious

At first glance, a 20ft by 7ft container gym without windows can feel like it’s going to be small, dark, and even a bit oppressive.

Not exactly the kind of environment you’d look forward to training in.

But with the right design choices, a container gym can feel surprisingly open, bright, and enjoyable to use.

1. Open Up One Entire Side

One of the most effective ways to transform the feel of a container gym is by opening up as much of the structure as possible.

That’s why we often install aluminium bifolding doors along almost the entire length of one side.

This does two important things:

  • Floods the space with natural light

  • Creates a strong connection between indoors and outdoors

The result is a gym that feels far more open and inviting.

In the warmer months, you can fully fold the doors back and instantly turn your gym into an indoor-outdoor training space — perfect for circuits, PT sessions, or simply enjoying fresh air while you train.

2. Use Mirrors to Create Space

If there’s one design feature that makes the biggest difference inside a container gym, it’s mirrors.

Strategically placed mirrors don’t just serve a functional purpose — they completely change how the space feels.

We typically install mirrors over the cargo doors at one end of the container. This achieves two things:

  • It reflects the room back on itself, creating the illusion of a much larger space

  • It bounces natural light around the gym, making it feel brighter and more open

It’s a simple addition, but the impact is huge.

3. Design With Space in Mind

A well-designed container gym isn’t just about what you put in — it’s about how you use the space.

Even in a compact footprint, smart layout decisions can leave you with plenty of usable floor space for movement, stretching, and functional training.

In fact, with the right setup, a 20ft container can comfortably house a full range of equipment while still feeling uncluttered and practical to train in  .

Final Thoughts

A container gym doesn’t have to feel cramped or restrictive.

With plenty of natural light, wide-opening doors, and smart use of mirrors, you can create a space that feels open, energising, and genuinely enjoyable to train in.
