How Secure Is a Container Gym? (Pod 20 Security Explained)

One of the questions I get asked a lot is:
“Matt, how secure is a container gym?”
So let me walk you through the security measures we’ve put in place on our Pod 20 to make it a genuinely secure garden gym.
The “standard container” padlock setup (and why it’s not enough)
On a typical shipping container you’ll find the lock bars, and they often come with small attachments designed to take a padlock. At first glance, it looks like a decent solution — clip a padlock on and the container feels secure.
But the issue is simple:
the padlock is completely exposed.
That makes it extremely vulnerable to attack. In the past I’ve known of containers being broken into and tools being stolen when people rely on this basic padlock method. If someone can get straight at a padlock with tools, it doesn’t take long.
Our solution: steel lock boxes
On our container gyms, we fit lock boxes.
These are solid steel, welded to the container, and they sit over the padlock area. Your padlock goes inside the box — which means it’s protected from attack and very difficult for someone to get tools onto it.
So instead of the padlock being the weak point, it becomes a much stronger security setup.
Bi-fold doors with multi-point locking
On the Pod 20 we often fit a four metre span of bi-fold doors.
These come with a standard multi-point locking system like you’d expect on quality aluminium doors in a home. They lock top, bottom and middle, which makes the whole door set-up far more secure than people assume.
If someone wanted to break into a Pod 20, I genuinely think they’d have a tough time.
More secure than a timber garden gym
If you compare it to a timber garden gym, the Pod 20 is a much more secure option, especially when you consider what you might be storing inside:
barbells and plates
dumbbells and kettlebells
benches
bikes/rowers
cable machines
Gym equipment adds up quickly, and it’s worth having a space that’s built to keep it safe.
Final thought
If security is high on your list — and you want a garden gym where your equipment stays safe and secure — the Pod 20 is a really strong option.
If you want advice based on your site, what you’re storing inside, and what door setup you’re considering, just get in touch and I’ll happily talk it through.
